Weg, a Dutch word meaning road, gone, or lost, is also the title of a poetic circus performance choreographed by Maartje Bonarius and Harm van der Laan, under the direction of Luc van Esch.
An award-winning wordless performance, Weg placed second at the 2012 international street theatre festival Buitenkans in Enschede, the Netherlands. Employing mime, dance, juggling, partner acrobatics and music, Weg conveys the story of a couple’s strained relationship. Accumulated irritations and misunderstandings between the pair escalate to a point of explosion, forcing each person to look deep within themselves, and to search for apologies as a road out of their strained dynamic…
In 2012, both Maartje and Harm graduated from the Bachelor of Circus Arts programme at the Codarts University in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. With Weg, their first touring performance, Maartje and Harm use inventive and dramatic circus elements against the backdrop of a home setting. The act is performed live with a score arranged and composed by music producer Jeroen Kerstens.
A beautiful storyline that is charming, rugged, vulnerable and powerful. These young artists combine acrobatics, circus techniques and theatre for a new form of performing art. I have seen their performance three times, and all three times I was breathless.
